Chapter Thirteen

Detective August grunted in annoyance as he looked at the two, “amateur sleuths wanting to play cop,” and his disdain for them was obvious.

Jackson had seen the man’s kind before—lazy, arrogant, and more concerned about kissing the right backside for career advancement than actually doing some work. In this case that work should have been solving a crime. But if it wasn’t high profile enough to get his name in the paper, August clearly wasn’t interested. This wasn’t just any old crime, this was murder. Every instinct Jackson had was sure of it.

“Ya should stick to baking and comin’ up with them word puzzles for your fancy magazines,” August lectured, trying to dumb down the tone of his voice as if Jackson and Anna were too stupid to understand. Jackson was pretty sure the detective thought he was clever. “The case is closed. Ruled an accident if you weren’t aware. It’s shut. S-H-U-T.” August spelled the word out slowly.

Jackson didn’t consider himself a violent man, but he really felt like punching this guy in the mouth. He refrained.

“I’m not asking about George,” Anna said just as slowly. “I’m asking if any other strange things are happening in town.”

“Read the paper, better still look on the inner-net.” August brushed them off. He dropped his mocking tone and waved his hand in dismissal. “I’m not your local reporter for the news.”

“Fine,” Jackson said. “Thank you for your time, Detective. I guess I’ll just have to interview someone else for this article since it’ll probably go national. Come on, Anna. Let’s see if that February guy is free. He’ll make a good above the fold photograph. His picture will track well with our readers.”

“Now hold on a minute,” August said. “What kind of strange things do you want to know about?”

Jackson pulled out his phone and pushed record. “You tell me.”

“Do you mean the unusual deaths by the shore?” he asked. “Or the reports of thefts?”

“What about anything involving children? Any gone missing lately? Any women expecting an unusual number of babies?” Jackson lifted his phone closer to August’s face.

August frowned. “Is this really about the anniversary of the troll rumors? Listen, the department has already addressed our stance on anything supernatural. The troll calls were a hoax by kids twenty years ago. There are no missing children reported this year. No alien births. No cults. Nothing. Here’s something you can quote me on, you’re wasting your time. Everlasting is just a normal town with normal small-town crimes.” August motioned toward the station door. “Now, if that is all you want to talk about I’m going to have to ask you to leave. I have more important things to do—like real police work. None of this Nancy Drew, Scooby—”

“Hey, August, the sheriff needs you to take this,” Judy, the station dispatcher, called from behind a desk. The woman lifted a piece of paper in the air and waved it. Jackson couldn’t see the lady’s face, but he recognized her voice from when she’d greeted them at the door.
